April 13th

We walked back out towards the road and across the street was Szechenyl Thermal Baths. A large, ornate, stone and yellow building, the baths were surrounded by grounds full of pretty spring flowers. Adding to our enjoyable walk, we passed the cutest squirrel who sported a mohawk. Wish we had squirrels like that at home. The little guy looked like fun.

We walked to the back side of the baths then across that street. There we came to the Budapest Zoo. We recognized the building that George, our local guide, had told us housed the elephants. Next to it, you could see a rhinoceros lumbering down a rise... perhaps towards a pond? I was going to pay the cheap entrance fee to the zoo to get a quick look at the animals but there was quite a lineup at the ticket booth so instead, I followed the other ladies down the street. On this side of the bridge (we crossed it when first arriving in this area), the pond had a fountain. The constant circulation of the water probably makes the pond more refreshing for the many ducks and pigeons. We also saw a type of crow or raven and one cormorant(?) making use of the pond. When we (and others) fed the ducks, the pigeons were there to share a portion of the booty. The cormorant ignored all of us and simply dove to retrieve food that had settled to the bottom of the pond.

After relaxing by the pond for awhile, we headed back to the subway entrance at Heroes' Square. Upon exiting at the Octagon station, we chose a sidewalk cafe to eat a bit of lunch before heading back to the hotel for our afternoon bus ride to Vienna.
