April 15th

When we returned to Vienna, the four of us took a page out of Lynn's book and had a sweet for lunch at Oberlaa which was across the street from the Hilton. After our treat, we split up to do our separate wishes. I opted to take the U3 subway line from the mall near us to Volkstheater.

Immediately upon exiting the subway, I saw what the stop was named for - Volkstheater, a citizen founded Peoples' Theater.

Further down the street, I saw the Museums Quartier which houses at least 10 separate museums related to art, performing art, and architecture to name a few.

My subway stop had brought me to the back of the Natural History Museum. When I had walked around it, I saw its twin, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien which houses Habsburgs' antiquities and art collections. Between the mirrored buildings was a statue of Maria Theresia surrounded by lovely topiaries and other statues.

Across the street from this complex was a set of arches. When I walked through the arches, I saw the Neue Burg Palace which we'd seen on our city tour. I walked back out through the arches and walked further down the street towards the Austrian Parliament building.

I shared my admiration of the building with two tour groups... one on segways and one on bicycles. I continued down the street to a beautiful park full of spring flowers including tulips and lilacs. The Rathaus City Hall dominated the grounds with its impressive spires and lovely clock tower. In Rathausplatz, the square in front of the hall which is now hosts balls, markets and events, families were participating in various fun events. I noted that Vienna is hosting an international beach volleyball event at the end of May, beginning of June. I wonder who from Winnipeg will be attending (Winnipeg boasts many of the top beach volleyball players in the world).

Across the street from Rathaus was the Burgtheater. Very impressive.

I walked back down the street to the Parliament. This time (being on the right side of the street to do so) I climbed the ramp up to the pillared entrance. The statues and decorations were even more impressive "up close and personal".

I walked back to the subway station a slightly different way so I could see a few more things before heading back towards the hotel.
