April 13th

Ave, Julie, Lynn and I passed on this morning's optional tour. We had already visited Parliament and the Great Market Hall. Instead, we bought some subway tickets and took a ride from the Octagon to Hosok Tere which means Heroes Square.

We walked across the square and went to the bridge where I'd seen the impressive buildings the day before. The large domed 19th century white building was "Városligeti Műjégpálya és Csónakázótó". The area is used in winter as a public skating area. Being spring, there was obviously no skating but ducks were making good use of the pond.

Further down the street on the same side of the road was Vajdahuny Castle. Finished in 1896, this castle shows the evolution of Hungarian architecture. The castle copies features of many buildings from around Hungary and across time. A particular bronze statue seemed to be very popular with a couple of groups of young people. They all took turns posing with the statue then rubbing the stylus in the statue's hand. The stylus had been rubbed so often it was shiny and golden unlike the rest of the statue which had darkened through weathering. We wondered why and finally, someone who spoke English explained: exam time was upon those young people - students - and it was said to be good luck to rub the stylus!

We continued out of the castle courtyard into the park where a few people were walking or playing with their dogs. A border collie came and visited me. I wished I had my dog park sack with me and I could have given this charmer a dog treat.
