April 8th

Once Lynn had taken her bag to our new room (our original one had been above the bar with live, LOUD music until 1 a.m. and I'd requested and gotten a change of room), she was ready to do some exploring. She said OK to walking to Old Town with a stipulation that we could and would rest along the way as necessary. So... we ended up retracing my walk from the previous day with two differences. First, the day was much sunnier and therefore more enjoyable and second, we didn't turn back at the University... we continued along right into the heart of Old Town.

We passed sights I'd already seen... the statue of Charles De Gaulle which was in the vicinity of the landmark palm tree... Lynn thought the tree was likely a decorated cell tower which makes sense. Holy Cross's green spires looked especially nice in the sunlight. The Polish double eagle on the gates of the University shone in the sunlight.

One of our "rest stops" was on a bench near Kosciol Wizytek Catholic Church just past the University gates. Flowers and trees were in bloom which made the rest stop very pleasant. We continued past the Presidential Palace which featured a statue of Prince Jozef Poniatowski on a horse and the Adam Mickiewicz Monument. When we got to the Tara Widokowy (an observation deck up about 140 stairs though I lost count!), Lynn stayed on terra firma while I tromped up the stairs to gain a different perspective of Warsaw. There I met two men on vacation from England for whom I took a "picture portrait with a view" and they reciprocated. From the tower, you could see the Vistula River and the National Stadium to the east, the Royal Palace and more of Old Town to the north and many interesting buildings that I'd passed on the bus tour to the west.

Lynn and I continued past the Royal Castle of Warsaw, the square with the tall Sigismund's Column, and went down the street passing the Archdiocese Basilica and the Shrine of our Lady of Grace. I showed Lynn the picture of the bombed out buildings which had now been restored or replaced. Once at or near the main square, we entered some shops to check out amber and other jewelry, even buying some! I found some nice earrings for my sister and a nice ring for my niece. For myself, I found a very nice pendant. The square had been busy that morning but now that later afternoon had arrived, the square was even busier. There were many people eating at the outdoor patios and even more going in and out of the many shops on the ground floors of the residences which surrounded the square.
