Evolution of the Modern Day Structure

1964 - The New South West Wing

In 1964 the south west corner of the original structure was razed and another new wing was built (pink). Three science classrooms were added on the same level as Rooms 25 & 26. In addition, a cafeteria was finally added to the school. It lay in the basement of the new wing.

Five new mathematics classrooms were added upstairs. The demonstration room (Room 63) for the domestic science classes was torn down to open the old part of the school to the new.

In 1958 the entry by the old principal's office was closed in so that a war memorial could be built.

The stained glass window was created by Leo Mol.

The original single storey South West corner of the school was replaced by the South West wing as shown in this aerial photograph from the 1965 yearbook. (Top left of picture)

This single storey corner of the school (far left, red door) was torn down and replaced by...

... the double storey (with basement cafeteria) structure shown here.

Instead of seeing this...

... you now saw this. Notice that Room 62 (background, 2nd storey) lost several windows. Also, a couple of the windows on the main level were bricked in and all were made smaller. The room in the lower hallway (ex-boys' gym, ex-study/detention hall) became the Music Room.

An interesting note: The original stairway (between Rooms 25 & 26) which led down to the original Music Room was built over and leveled off to connect the new classrooms with the original school (new rooms were now on the same level as the double storey original school). The stairway can be seen from below if you venture into the school tunnel (basement level) just off the cafeteria.

Look just through this doorway. You can see a metal strip on the floor which delineates the end of the original school building. Between the doors and the strip is the place where the stairway led down to the lower hall.

When the south west door was closed over, a new doorway was created at the foot of the stairs on the south side of the school.

To give a quick recap: The original school was built in 1923 (yellow). The 1954 addition (blue) included a new gym/auditorium, changing rooms, and a corridor which led from the gym to the main hallway (note that the corridor would be inside the green). In 1957, the north wing of classrooms was built (green). In 1964, the south west wing was built (pink). We're almost done! Click "Continue" below to see the final changes to the school.
