Graduating Class of 1927

• Six courses were offered in high school:
  1. A matriculation course
  2. A teachers' course
  3. A combination of 1. and 2.
  4. A practical arts course
  5. A technical course for boys
  6. A commercial course

• The principal of the school was still Mr. A. C. Campbell.

• The school publication (previously known as the "Mercury") became the "Breezes".

In the Fall...

John Leishman was elected president of the Senior class and Lola Smith the secretary. Other members of the Senior council were Edith Horton, Dot Smith, Walter Burns, and Allan Ryckman. Robert Alexander was elected president of the Junior class and Mary Mann the secretary. Clara Clandening, Evelyn McKenzie, Lloyd Bruce, and Fred Lang made up the rest of the Junior council. Don Overholt was named president of the Primary class and Beatrice Bennett was named the secretary. That Primary council consisted of E. Ballantyne, M. Brown, N Erickson, and N. Vaux.

• Lowell Thomas gave a "verbal and pictoral presentation" called "With Lawrence in Arabia and Allanby in Palestine". The students were especially impressed by "pictures of aeroplanes flying over the country and charting it" and by beautiful colour photographs of "Arabia and the Holy Land".

• The Hallowe'en Masquerade Party featured the "Melody Kings" orchestra. Christine Hallgrimson dressed as a gypsy girl was awarded first prize, Dorothy Pound dressed as a colonial lady was awarded second, and Jimmy Goodman as "une petite fille" was awarded third.

• The annual inter-Collegiate field day sports was held at Polo Park. Some highlights included:
  • Senior girls' dash: Helen Craig 2nd, Lillian Furney 3rd
  • Junior girls' dash: Elaine Dimmell 1st, Marguerite Ross 2nd
  • Senior girls' shuttle relay: 1st (broke a record)
  • Junior girls' shuttle relay: 1st
  • Senior girls' ball throw: Lillian Dexter 1st
  • Junior girls' ball throw: Elaine Dimmell 1st
  • The boys? "Oh they were there and worked hard, too. You know yourself how accidents can happen."

• The Orchestra was reorganized. Five glee clubs were formed: Primary, Junior, and Senior Girls and Junior and Senior Boys.

• The Seniors put on the musical operetta "Pirates of Penzance" in January. The first performance on Thursday night was remembered as being a backstage nightmare... but "Will miracles never cease?" they all managed to take their places on stage at the appropriate times and things continued smoothly until the descending curtain got stuck and refused to budge. Only when an "army of scene-shifters, prompters, electricians, stokers, and deckhands brought their mighty intellects to bear upon them" was the problem solved. At Friday's performance, some on the girls leaned on the scenery and nearly caused a disaster when it started to topple. The catstrophe was averted "by the masterful brain of Walter Burns and the Herculean strength of Miss Hickson, who grabbed the wavering wings and bore the forest and sky upon their mighty shoulders". Also on Friday night, the prop man failed to load the King's pop gun and when he pulled the trigger... it "disappointed the audience greatly but, politely, they hid their feelings under a screen of hilarious laughter". Saturday's performance was marked by the "melting of P.C. Kenneth McLean's moustache. It ran down his face until it resembled the Amazon River."

• The hockey team lost a close game (2-4) in the inter-high-school championship against Kelvin.

• In February, the Senior Dance was held. For 50 cents the seniors danced to the music of the "Melody Kings" orchestra from 8:00 p.m. until midnight and enjoyed a "luncheon break" (a buffet) halfway through the evening in the library. An impromptu game involving "badminton balls" and refreshment trays was broken up by the caterer rescuing his trays. When the dance ended at midnight, a "flotilla of Diamond Taxis" was there to take the tired Seniors home thanks to foresight and thoughtfulness of Senior class president, John Leishman.

• The Junior class enjoyed a similar event. The Junior Party was also held on a February evening. Jimmie Gowler's orchestra supplied the music. For those who did not wish to dance, an indoor track meet took place in the erection shed. Refreshments were served in the Library halfway through the evening.

In the spring...

• Miss Helen Lowe (XII-B, Room 61) represented Daniel McIntyre in the Provincial Oratorical Contest in April at the Walker Theatre.

• At the Musical Festival in May the Girls' Glee Club won the clas for senior high school choruses (Hon. James Cox Aikens shield) then won the Earl Gray trophy which was the grand finale for school choirs competing in the festival. Also attaining honours at the festival were:

  • Ethel Hubbard & Irene Carter, 1st (junior vocal duets)
  • Eileen Christie & Frances Fox, 2nd (junior vocal duets)
  • Marie Daniels & Nadine Lush, 3rd (junior vocal duets)
  • Jack Dryborough, finals (boys' solo)
  • Irene Carter, finals (junior contralto solo)
  • George Pollack, 2nd (senior violin)
  • Helen & Louise Templeton, 2nd (piano imtermediate duet)

• There were 2 graduating classes in grade 12: Room 58 (XII-A) and Room 61 (XII-B).
• There were 6 graduating classes in grade 11: Room 55 (XI-D), Room 51 (XI-E), Room 18 (XI-F), Room 56 (XI-A), Room 53 (XI-B), Room 22 (XI-C).
• There were 3 graduating classes in grade 10: Room 8 (X-H), Room 10 (X-K), and Room 6 (X-L).

Leslie Cannon, president of Room 53 (XI-B), won an Isbister Scholarship and the Governor-General's Medal for proficiency in school activities. (He was awarded the Governor General's Medal at the 1928 Graduating Ceremonies.) In 1928, Leslie won a scholarship in Arts in his first year at the University of Manitoba.
