In 1926...

The Prime Minister of Canada
was
Mackenzie King (January-June)
Arthur Meighen (June-September)
Mackenzie King (September-)
The Premier of Manitoba
was
John Bracken
The Mayor of the City of Winnipeg
was
Lt. Col. Ralph Humphreys Webb, D.S.O., M.C.

Canadian travel destinations were advertised in 1926 editions of National Geographic.
Two popular spots to visit (they still are!) were Jasper (above) for a golf weekend and the Chateau Frontenac in "Old Quebec" (left).
It's a wonder anyone went on vacations in 1926... take a look at the luggage you would have been carting around!
Does this Packard look familiar? To its 1926 owner, it would have: "Packard encourages its owners in keeping their cars, through retaining the beauty of Packard lines and announcing no yearly models. It is now more than ten years since Packard offered yearly models." Perhaps by advertising that the customer should keep their Packard longer, the company eventually put itself out of business! Perhaps if customers had listened to Packard back then, there wouldn't be as many junkyards full of scrap metal now!
In contrast to the Packard advertisement, the Lincoln Phaeton boasted "smart touches" such as "a tan top with mahogany bows", wire wheels that "carried forward", and a "Tonneau cowl and windshield if desired". Perhaps Lincoln knew the consumer better... Ford Motors is still around and you could go to one of their dealerships to buy a Ford Lincoln today.
A quote from a 1926 advertisement: "The development of Frigidaire electric refrigeration has brought about a new type of kitchen architecture - more convenient, more attractive, more efficient - designed without the handicap of providing for an outside ice supply." ... "the use of Frigidaire can greatly improve the plan of kitchens for new homes" ... "Frigidaire, installed in your own ice-box, can produce a remarkable transformation in the convenience and efficiency of your present kitchen."
Another advertisement quote: "... eight million know, as the makers of Boyce Moto Meters knew 12 years ago, that the logical place for a motor heat indicator is on the radiator cap, always in the direct line of driving vision, where it is not necessary to shift the eyes from the road to the dashboard."
A "motion picture camera for the individual" by Bell & Howell Co.
Would you get away with this kind of advertising nowadays?
"Prevent sore throats!"
"Don't spoil your figure by eating between meals! When tempted smoke a Kensitas instead."
Most advertisements were aimed at young women, the "flappers".

Things that occurred in 1926:

  • American physicist Robert Goddard launched the first liquid-propellant rocket.

  • Chiang Kai-shek organized the Northern Expedition to unite China.

  • English author A.A. Milne wrote the children's book, "Winnie the Pooh". Milne's character was inspired by a bear from Winnipeg visiting a British zoo, thus the name "Winnie".

  • Germany was admitted into the League of Nations.

  • Hirohito became the emperor of Japan.

  • Nobile, Amundsen, and Ellsworth piloted the airship Norge over the North Pole. Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett made the first airplane flight over the North Pole.

  • The General Strike broke out in Britain. It involved 3 million workers.

  • The Harlem Globetrotters basketball team was organized in Chicago.

  • Romantic screen star Rudolph Valentino died after an appendix operation. The 31 year old star had been the star of the popular movies "The Sheik" and "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". Thousands of fans waited in line to view his body which lay in state in Broadway.

  • Greta Garbo had her film debut. Fritz Lang's Metropolis was a box office favourite.

  • T.E. Lawrence published "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" and Edna Ferber published "Show Boat".

  • Agatha Christie "disappeared" and after a nation-wide search by press reporters in Britain, was found in a Harrogate hotel. Her book "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" was published shortly after. Did anyone think to ask Agatha if she liked being alone sometimes?

  • The following announcement was made from England: "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York was safely delivered of a daughter at 20 minutes to 3 o'clock yesterday morning". The baby, of course, was the present day Queen, Elizabeth II.

  • Alan Cobham completed a 28,000 mile round trip from London to Australia and back by seaplane.

  • The first successful television system was demonstrated to scientists at the Royal Instituion in London by Scottish scientist Logie Baird. Baird also set up his own Television Development Co.
